Super History® is the ultimate off line browser, history and Internet catalog program. It consists of two modules:
One browser helper object (BHO) that makes a screen shot of each HTML document opened in the browser Internet Explorer ® and saves this image in a collection of images created by the user. The image format best suited is JPG. The program provides an adjustable delay period between opening a new document and taking the screen shot. This delay is required as there is a time difference between the event "Document complete" generated by the web browser and the completion of the web page on the screen. Therefore, the BHO module must wait some seconds before taking a screen shot.
Most of the web documents are not only simple text pages, but rather contain many frames, applets, small flash videos, advertisements, and other stuff that must be loaded successively before the display is finished. To make a screen shot of the complete document and to suppress many almost identical screen shots when the page is loaded, adjusting a small delay time, e.g., 1 second has proved to be most useful. Both, a zero delay and a very large delay of 5 seconds and more, are less effective.
The other module is a catalog program that displays an illustrated catalog with complete document data of all web pages visited. The program writes its own browser records and does not use the browser History files. Therefore, it is more flexible than History to be customized according to user's preferences.
The user can modify the size of screenshots and different display modes in the catalog (see screenshots). Keeping screenshots in addition to the listing of URLs will improve browsing history as it supports the optical memory of the user. The screenshots are not intended to replace the original web pages on the user's PC but can be used as fast orientation about their contents. Of course, hyperlinks on the screenshots do not work as they are only images and not small web pages, but from the catalog, any web page can be opened in a browser window. They can even be made large enough to read the text or the headlines. One screenshot takes about 10 through 70 KB as JPG file, depending on the size selected. If the user browses intensively and visits about 400 pages a day, this might take 20 MB storage, not too much for hard disks in the gigabyte range. If the files are obsolete, they can be deleted all together. But the program allows to save selected list items with their images into any folder. So important sites can be stored and retained separately like favorites. During browsing, the user will not even be aware of the program as the BHO works completely automatically in the background. Only when the catalog is viewed, the visited pages become visible. This feature could make the program useful for computer forensics.
Additional instructions for using the program can be found in the help file installed with the software.
